Each and every day infants across North America are shaken and abused because the person caring for them became frustrated with their crying. Many times the abuse could have been prevented had the person caring for the infant only known that early infant crying may be normal.
Click For Babies is a North America initiative to help educate caregivers about normal infant crying, how to cope with crying and the dangers of reacting to crying in frustration by shaking or harming an infant. The National Center of Shaken Baby Syndrome has partnered with Keeping Babies Safe in North Carolina and this exciting public education initiative has been developed.
Local hospital maternity units already provide their Period of PURPLE Crying program materials to new Mom’s and would like to distribute knitted/crocheted PURPLE baby hats as well. However, few hospitals have volunteer knitting groups to make their caps – that is where you come in.
I have put together kits to make that adorable Baby Berry Hat pattern on Ravelry by Michele Sabatier. A sample is on display at The Fibre Studio. The kit includes enough PURPLE and green yarn to make the body and leaves of the hat. A copy of the pattern is also included. Each kit costs $6.50, which we will carry until project’s end (November 31, 2011). Click here for a copy of the “Free” pattern. Some folks may find this pattern a bit intimidating so beginning in August, we will reserve our Thursday night Open Knit/Crochet time 6:00-8:00PM to help with this hat. If you join us, you will learn to knit in the round using the magic loop method and also beginning intarsia.

I hope you will join us in making as many Purple baby hats as possible. Thank you. Debbie
