Learn To Knit!

Join us for a fun event and Learn to Knit!

During our three day 1 ½ hour class, you will become familiar with many knitting terms. You will learn to Cast On (CO), the Knit (K) stitch, the Purl (P) stitch and to Bind Off (BO).

We have chosen a soft and simple wash cloth for your first project.  Besides learning to knit and purl, you will also learn to understand some of the basic stitch patterns such as; garter, stockinette, rib and seed stitch.   You will learn to increase/decrease stitches, read a basic pattern and fix your mistakes.

Check our calendar for class times.

Class Fee: $60.00 plus materials.

We’ve received some bright and fun Jacquard textile paints and mini kits to help take your next fiber project to the next level. Not seeing the yarn you were just “dyeing” to find for a specific project?  Stop by The Fibre Studio and look at our wonderful undyed yarns and paint (stamp, brush, stencil) the finished project to get that look you wanted to achieve.  Knit…paint…repeat.  Then, watch the magic happen.

Looking for a hand-made project to give for the holidays but are tight on time?  Look no further as we have a new shipment of Katia yarns–including Aloha, Kimbo, and Inca.  We guarantee your Aloha scarf won’t take more than ten minutes…and that includes the time it takes to purchase the yarn!

Fiber Arts: The Next Generation

Recently, The Fibre Studio has focused on developing the next generation of fiber artisans.  Many of these fiber crafts (sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, etc.) are no longer shared or “handed down” from one generation to the next.  Given the hectic pace of today’s society, it is imperative that young men and women have the opportunity to learn these crafts and enjoy the camraderie and satisfaction of creating something with their own hands.  Sharing the experience with friends only makes the experience bettah and bettah!

Below are three of The Fibre Studio’s newest students (Hallie F., Emily C., and Ashley N.) who are participating in a series of Beginners Knitting Classes (offered on Mondays in November and upon request otherwise).  These ladies ARE part of the next generation.  May the “force be with you”!

Corinne – KAL (Knit-A-Long) UPDATED!

Carol G. with her Corinne

Carol G. came into The Studio Saturday morning ready to begin her sleeve.  Her size called for 8+ inches (C/O 43 stitches) for the sleeve.  She also desired a more fitted sleeve at the wrist.  We came up with a revised Short Row Shaping (SRS).  The purpose of making this change to the sleeves for the Corinne is to make the sleeve longer  but more fitted.  The pattern calls for adding 8 inches to the sleeve, we are adding 11 inches.

Also, the pattern as written ask you to c/0 using the cable cast on.  If you use a Provisional Cast On you can use the three needle bind-off  at the end of the sleeve and not have any seams to sew.  if you would like to use the provisional cast on, follow these instructions.

Provisional Cast On  – Using a scrap piece of yarn and a crochet hook, chain 60 stitches and tie off.  Begin by picking up 55 stitches along the chain.

Here is the revised Short Row Shaping (SRS) for the sleeve –  We are adding two markers, one at the wrist and one just below the elbow.   To make things simple, we will number the markers as follows:  From neck edge,  the marker that is five stitches in will be marker #1, the shoulder makers will be marker #2, the bust marker will be marker #3, the elbow marker will be marker #4 and the marker near the cuff will be marker #5.

Revised SRS:  After C/O 55 stitches, at wrist edge, K5 – PM#5, K30 – PM#4, knit to marker #3 (bust) W&T, knit to marker #5 W&T, knit to marker #2 (shoulder) W&T, knit to marker #4 (elbow) W&T, knit to marker 1 (neck) W&T, knit to wrist end-turn, knit to neck edge-turn, knit to wrist end.  This completes one Revised SRS.  Work two Rev SRS at beginning of sleeve (these will replace the regular SRS at the beginning of sleeve).  Work  number of regular SRS for body of sleeve then work Rev SRS for last two SRS of sleeve).

If you used the provisional Cast On, Slip those live stitches back on to your needle tip and prepare to use a three needle bind off – for no seams.

Ann D’s Corinne

Love these colors!

Several months ago, I found a great new project on Knitty called Corinne by Crystal Erb Junkins. It is this great cardigan knit totally in garter stitch – working side to side. The shaping is done through short rows.

I started a Corinne for my daughter using Soft Linen from Classic Elite Yarns. This yarn is complied of 35% wool, 35% linen and 30% baby alpaca. I am using color #2256 which is a lovely lavender. This project goes quickly, my daughter’s Corinne is 80% finished.

However, I can’t wait to begin my Corinne which will be knit using Boboli by Berocco.  I am using color #5333 which can be worn dressy or with jeans.Boboli #5333

Join us in the Studio each Friday morning in November between 10a-12p for the “in house” Knit-A-Long or join us online by sending me an email Debbie(at)FiberStudioShop(dot)com.   Once you have been added to the blog list, you may add your comments and don’t forget your pictures.

Click For Babies!

Each and every day infants across North America are shaken and abused because the person caring for them became frustrated with their crying. Many times the abuse could have been prevented had the person caring for the infant only known that early infant crying may be normal.

Click For Babies is a North America initiative to help educate caregivers about normal infant crying, how to cope with crying and the dangers of reacting to crying in frustration by shaking or harming an infant.  The National Center of Shaken Baby Syndrome has partnered with Keeping Babies Safe in North Carolina and this exciting public education initiative has been developed.

Local hospital maternity units already provide their Period of PURPLE Crying program materials to new Mom’s and would like to distribute knitted/crocheted PURPLE baby hats as well.  However,  few hospitals have volunteer knitting groups to make their caps – that is where you come in.

I have put together kits to make that adorable Baby Berry Hat pattern on Ravelry by Michele Sabatier.  A sample is on display at The Fibre Studio. The kit includes enough PURPLE and green yarn to make the body and leaves of the hat.  A copy of the pattern is also included.  Each kit costs $6.50, which we will carry until project’s end (November 31, 2011).   Click here for a copy of the “Free” pattern.   Some folks may find this pattern a bit intimidating so beginning in August, we will reserve our Thursday night Open Knit/Crochet time 6:00-8:00PM to help with this hat.  If you join us, you will learn to knit in the round using the magic loop method and also beginning intarsia.

For more information on Click for Babies, go here, then follow the tabs at the top of the page.

I hope you will join us in making as many Purple baby hats as possible.  Thank you.  Debbie
